History and Purpose
The Sobell Foundation was established in 1977 by the late Sir Michael Sobell, who remained actively involved in the grant-making trust until shortly before his death in 1993.
The Foundation was formed for general charitable purposes. The deed of trust allows the Trustees the discretion to apply funds where they are most needed, ensuring we remain responsive to evolving charitable needs.
Funding and Priorities
We are not a fundraising organisation; our grants are funded entirely through the income generated by our investments.
Our grant-making follows the founder’s philanthropic interests, focusing primarily on causes benefiting:
- Children
- The sick
- The elderly
- The needy and disabled
Geographical Distribution
The Trustees aim to maintain a balanced distribution of funds between two key areas:
- Non-Jewish charities operating solely in the UK
- Jewish charities operating principally in the UK and Israel
